A pedestrian is dead after they were hit by a vehicle in New Westminister early Wednesday (Dec. 18), police said.
The crash near Queens Park closed McBride Boulevard in both directions between 6th Avenue and Memorial Drive around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 18). The road re-opened around 3 p.m.
"Traffic is snarled throughout New West as a result," according to a Black Press reporter at the scene. The crash also caused a significant backup for commuters trying to access the northbound lanes of Pattullo Bridge to Surrey. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
Police in New Westminster expect the road to be closed for several hours while they investigate.
"The driver of the vehicle remains on scene. All the contributing factors of this incident are still under investigation," Sgt. Andrew Leaver, New Westminster Police, said in a news release Wednesday.
"The New Westminster Police Major Crime Unit have assumed conduct of this investigation, and are being supported by the RCMP Integrated Collision and Reconstruction Services Unit," Leaver said.
The New Westminster Police Department asks anyone with information or who witnessed the collision to call them at 604-525-5411.
