An Abbotsford family has started an online fundraising campaign to help with expenses while their 25-year-old son battles a rare lung disease.
Kolton Fowlie was diagnosed at the age of one with a terminal condition known as bronchiolitis obliterans. The disease causes scarring and inflammation of the airways, which leads to a decline in lung function.
A started by the family states that Kolton's condition has taken a critical turn. He was placed on the transplant list on Dec. 23.
"The disease has severely damaged his lungs, leaving him with very limited breathing capacity," the page states.
"(On Dec. 26), he collapsed at home and had to be rushed to the hospital, requiring emergency medical intervention to stabilize his condition. It was a terrifying and humbling experience for all of us. The medical team has done everything they can, but we know that the fight is far from over."
An update on Dec. 28 states that Kolton has been moved out of the intensive care unit, but he remains in the hospital as doctors work to keep him stable and run more tests.
Meanwhile, Kolton's mom, Casandra Hiscock, has taken time off work to be by his side, while his dad, Joe, is now the sole income earner. But Joe would like to be by his family's side during the difficult days ahead.
"The hardest is yet to come. The months and years ahead will not only involve the terrifying wait for a matching donor, but also a long recovery process post-transplant," the GoFundMe page states.
"We are preparing for months, even years, of difficult adjustments, medical care, and healing."
The GoFundMe page is seeking donations to help the family with the costs of lost wages, hospital parking costs, rent, food and other household expenses.
"We are doing our best to stay afloat, but the financial burden is becoming unbearable ... Our family just needs a break and to be able to spend this previous time together."
The page can be found by searching "" at gofundme.com. As of Monday morning (Dec. 30), the campaign had raised $4,800 towards the $20,000 goal.
