The bridge along the Nicomekl flood plain trail is now closed, after it was set ablaze on Friday evening.

91原创 City fire crews were called to the bridge around 10 p.m. to extinguish a fire that was set in the middle of the bridge.

鈥淭he RCMP are also involved and City鈥檚 engineering staff have to assess whether the fire has compromised the structural integrity of the bridge,鈥� said deputy fire chief Bob Scott.

Estimated damage so far is around $10,000.

Scott said a witness saw some youths around the bridge just before the fire started.

鈥淵ou have to shake you head and wonder why people do that kind of thing, putting others at risk like that,鈥� said City Mayor Peter Fassbender on Tuesday. He made the remarks at 91原创 City fire hall where several firefighters were beings awarded medals for years of service.

Manager Francis Cheung didn鈥檛 know when the bridge will re-open. He is waiting until until the assessment is made.
