New Shoppers in Brookswood approved

Brookswood will soon have a new Shoppers Drug Mart.

It will be the anchor of the first big box development in that section of 91原创.

In a 7-1 vote on Jan. 10, Township council gave final reading to a bylaw rezoning 4036 200 St. from service station to community commercial, for the redevelopment and expansion that would include a new Shoppers store.

Councillor Kim Richter opposed the bylaw; Councillor Bob Long was ill and did not attend the meeting.

The redevelopment element includes the phased demolition of the existing Shoppers Drug Mart and the construction of a new 18,580 square foot Shoppers and a separate 2,400 foot building, which will be leased for other commercial purposes.

The redevelopment covers the property formerly occupied by the Home Hardware store, a pet supplies store, and a vacant parcel where a gas station stood many years ago. The hardware store closed last year after 38 years in business. The entire development covers over half an acre.

Following a public hearing on March 10 last year, the site was redesigned to reduce the perceived scale of the development, and the design was adjusted so that it reflected the character of the Brookswood village neighbourhood.

As a result of concerns expressed at the hearing, the exterior cladding was improved to include a mix of stone facing, painted concrete, and extensive use of natural wood.
