Work on the new Glover Road overpass over Highway 1 is nearing completion.

A statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, in response to a 91原创 Advance Times query, disclosed the bridge deck concrete has been poured, and work is currently underway to tie in the approach roads at both sides of the new bridge.

鈥漁nce the tie-in work is complete next month [March], the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure鈥檚 contractor will be installing new pavement on the approach roads and bridge deck,鈥 the Feb. 22 statement said.

The ministry expects the crossing will be ready to open by early summer.

Costing $19.5 million, the overpass replacement is part of a wider project to widen Highway 1 to six lanes all the way from 216th Street to 264th Street. The extra lanes will be HOV/electric vehicle lanes.

The new Glover Road crossing is being built with a 5.2-metre height clearance to improve safety along Highway 1.

The old overpass, built in the 1960s, was lower than the other nearby overpasses, and truck drivers who failed to check their clearances in advance have repeatedly smashed into the structure, usually heading east, causing partial closures of the overpass to make repairs.

When completed, the new crossing will have multi-use pathways on either side, each three meters wide. This will also be an upgrade for cyclists and pedestrians. The old overpass had a single sidewalk on its east side, and no shoulders or bike lanes for cyclists.

B.C.鈥檚 Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced on Friday, Feb. 16 that contracts to build the next phase are out to tender.

It includes widening the road between 216th Street and 264th Streets, installing a new HOV lane in each direction, and the replacement of the interchange at 232nd Street.

264th Street interchange has the highest number of crashes in 91原创.

The new 232nd Street interchange will be reconfigured to improve capacity and will have an increased height clearance over the highway. It will also include multi-use pathways in both directions for cyclists and pedestrians 鈥 the current overpass has a single sidewalk on one side and no bike lanes.

A nearby rail overpass will also be replaced with a new, higher structure.

This phase of highway widening, out to 264th Street, will cost $345 million.
