A Surrey teen has been convicted of manslaughter in the stabbing death of a 44-year-old man.
In August of 2022, Surrey RCMP at the intersection of 184 Street and Fraser Highway, where they found Leroy Billy, 44, suffering from stab wounds. Billy was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, an Integrated Homicide Investigation Team release said.
IHIT took conduct of the investigation and worked in close partnership with the Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service, and on Aug. 18, 2023, a 17-year-old youth from Surrey was .
The name of the accused was not released as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), the release noted.
Following court proceedings on Feb. 5, the accused was found guilty of manslaughter and is scheduled to appear for his sentencing hearing, which has been adjourned until March.
鈥淢r. Billy died tragically from a senseless attack on the street,鈥 said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
鈥淭he conviction was made possible by a number of witnesses who did the right thing by cooperating with the police and testifying in court.鈥
She said IHIT and the RCMP's thoughts remain with Billy's family as court proceedings draw to a conclusion.
