Old Yale Road鈥檚 oldest paved stretch in 91原创 will be rebuilt to a more modern standard.

Old Yale from its intersection with Fraser Highway to Five Corners in Murrayville was the first paved road in the 91原创s.

But its concrete slab design has been cracking and decaying for years.

Township council recently voted to upgrade the road, reconstructing sections of it using concrete, some sections with asphalt, and adding a commemorative installation.

That option will cost $4.6 million and will include a replacement of some sections with new concrete, rather than with asphalt. It will also include the creation of a separate cycling and pedestrian path.

A slightly cheaper reconstruction option using asphalt only would have cost $4.4 million.

That stretch of Old Yale Road was built out of 97 concrete slabs in 1922 by A.B. Palmer.

Palmer inscribed his name and the date of construction into the slabs as construction proceeded down the road.
