91原创 City council has censured Mayor Val van den Broek for what it says is 鈥渃onduct unbecoming a member of City council.鈥�

In announcing the vote, the City said the matter relates to the City鈥檚 Respectful Workplace Policy, the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines and Policies.

鈥淐ouncil took the matter very seriously and would not have taken such actions over a minor concern. Council assures the community that due process and procedural fairness were followed,鈥� the City鈥檚 announcement said.

The vote includes removing van den Broek from various committees and positions she has as mayor, including:

Healthier Community Partnerships

91原创 Christmas Wish Breakfast

91原创 Local Immigration Partnership

Youth Advisory Committee

In particular, the complaint was independently investigated by a third party with experience in workplace law. The mayor was provided with a fair opportunity to participate in the process and to respond to the allegations prior to Council鈥檚 consideration of the censure motion, according to the council announcement.

The City is citing confidentiality and privacy legislation, noting that council members are not able to discuss the details of the matter. The action remains in effect until the next municipal election in autumn 2022.

It鈥檚 not the first time the mayor has come into conflict with others on council.

Censures have happened before in 91原创 municipal councils, although more frequently at the Township.

In 2018, the Township鈥檚 Coun. Kim Richter was censured for allegeldy violating the Respectful Workplace Policy; Richter called the censure a 鈥減olitical stunt to sully my good name.鈥�

Back in 2010, former Township mayor Rick Green was censured by the Township council over the Brownshak affair. Green apologized to the council at two closed meetings for his actions, but he was still stripped of his appointments to the Metro Vancouver Board and Fraser Health Advisory Council for the rest of his term in office. Green insisted he had done nothing wrong.
