91原创 RCMP was able to recover a stolen vehicle and $15,000 worth of tools thanks to technology and smart thinking.
A work van was stolen sometime overnight on April 6 in the 91原创 City area, said 91原创 police. The van was equipped with fleet GPS and was filled with tools that had all been marked with unique identifying features. A short time later, police were able to pinpoint the location of the vehicle using the GPS. Unfortunately, the tools had been removed from the vehicle.
This is where the technology part comes in. The GPS data in conjunction with the distinctive markings on the tools and observations made during the investigation culminated in the application for and execution of a search warrant.
The combination of quick police response, technology and distinctive markings on tools lead to the recovered of all of the $15,000 worth of tools. In addition, police recovered a stolen camping trailer, a new enclosed utility trailer and a variety of other stolen property from jurisdictions around the Lower Mainland. Police estimate the total value of property recovered at approximately $50,000.
A 56-year-old 91原创 man was arrested at the residence and charges will be recommended to Crown Counsel at the culmination of the investigation, said 91原创 RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy.
Police would like to encourage companies and/or tradespeople to ensure they take the time to mark their tools/equipment with something easily identifiable and highly visible to assist in recovery if it should ever become necessary. Consider taking photographs of your property with the markings visible to assist police with the investigation.
