Rising water levels soak the banks of the Fraser River on the 91原创 side, in an image taken on July 7. Township crews are now checking 91原创鈥檚 three dikes on a daily basis, while the water level is expected to peak below flood level, sometime today (Thursday, July 14).

The surge of water that flooded parts of Prince George is heading for the Lower Fraser River and 91原创, the BC River Forecast Centre says.

The agency issued a 鈥渉igh streamflow advisory鈥 for the Lower Fraser River Monday, warning levels at Mission were expected to reach peak levels Wednesday and Thursday.

A number of homes in one Prince George neighbourhood were evacuated because of minor flooding upriver, but the waters were beginning to ebb Wednesday and some residents were allowed to return to their houses.

In 91原创 Township, municipal crews have begun making daily checks of river levels at three dikes in Glen Valley near the Abbotsford border, Fort 91原创, and near the Golden Ears bridge.

Usually the dikes are checked weekly, but when the levels at the Mission River gauge rose, the frequency was increased.

Currently the water is no higher than the 鈥渢oe鈥 or base of the dikes, the Township engineering department reported.

The higher than usual river levels are blamed on heavier than normal rainfall through the upper portions of the Fraser River watershed and North Thompson River late last week and weekend.

More rain was forecast for the Upper Fraser watershed and it was expected to cause another rise in river levels through Prince George around the end of the week or the start of the weekend, with the surge working its way downstream to the Lower Mainland by early next week.
