Events in Alvin Wright's bedroom described

RCMP Const. Patti Ramsay described her activities at Alvin Wright's home, before he was shot by a fellow RCMP officer.

With her gun drawn, 91原创 RCMP Const. Patti Ramsay climbed the stairs to the bedroom where Alvin Wright was crouched inside the closet.

She was one of four RCMP officers who responded to an Aug. 7, 2010  call to the 91原创 City townhouse where Wright and his girlfriend Heather Hannon lived with their seven-month- old daughter.

Ramsay testified on Tuesday that she noted that the toilet in the upstairs bathroom had just been flushed and the door to the bedroom was closed.

At a coroner鈥檚 inquest into the police shooting death of 22-year-old Wright, Ramsay testified she didn鈥檛 announce herself at the bedroom door.

Instead, she tried to open the door. Unable to, she pushed on it, unsuccessfully.

鈥淚 think the door is barricaded,鈥 she told Sgt. Don Davidson, who was the only other officer involved in seeking out Wright inside the home. At the time, neither knew Alvin鈥檚 name, nor did they know the 911 caller鈥檚 name, or much about the situation they were entering into, except that the complainant wanted her boyfriend out so she could move her items and her baby鈥檚 clothes out, Ramsay testified.

She said Davidson tried the door and was able to open it with ease. Nothing was blocking it.

鈥淲e were up there to check on Alvin鈥檚 well being,鈥 she said when asked why they had gone upstairs.

鈥淒id you call out his name from downstairs or think to ask his brother to go get him?鈥 asked inquest counsel Rod Mackenzie.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 recall,鈥 Ramsay said.

鈥淲ere you going upstairs to arrest Alvin?鈥 Mackenzie asked.

鈥淭he purpose was to check on his well being,鈥 said Ramsay.

鈥淚sn鈥檛 it normal course of action in a domestic dispute to arrest?鈥 he asked. She agreed.

Ramsay testified that she doesn鈥檛 recall if Davidson announced himself when he walked through the door. He walked by the bedroom closet, and she heard him say 鈥淲hat are you doing in there. What do you have? Drop the knife.鈥

She testified that Davidson then tried to open the closet and then kicked the closet door open, finding Wright sitting down with his knees up and a hunting knife in his right hand, down near the floor.

鈥淒on kept talking to him, to drop the knife and asking his name,鈥 she said.

Wright repeated his name to them. She said Davidson was speaking calmly and softly. She said she saw Wright get up in the closet and make an advance towards Davidson, with the knife held at his side, pointing forward.

鈥淭o me, that is an aggressive motion,鈥 she said.

Despite a 91原创 RCMP that Wright was holding both a knife and a hatchet, according to the two police officers who who witnessed the shooting, it appears Wright was simply holding a knife.

Just before Wright was shot by Davidson, there were three officers in the small bedroom. Once Wright took a step towards Davidson, one shot was fired into his midsection.

鈥淒idn鈥檛 anyone ask Alvin to stop moving forward?鈥 asked lawyer Don Sorochan, counsel for widow Heather Hannon. She replied that Wright advanced forward with the knife, was shot and fell to the ground. She didn鈥檛 see a hatchet in his hand. Neither did Const. Brent Halm who testified that he was called upstairs by Ramsay after Davidson had seen a knife.

David Eby, counsel for Alvin鈥檚 father Allan, asked Ramsay why she refused to give investigators one set of notes she made from the incident.

鈥淭hose were my notes made for my personal being and for my psychologist,鈥 she replied. Eby then asked what kind of support services are offered for officers following such traumatic experiences as this.

The RCMP counsel David Kwan objected to this question, saying it was irrelevant to the death of Wright.

None of the officers who have testified so far announced themselves when entering the Wright home, or when entering Wright鈥檚 bedroom.

Sorochan also asked whether Halm and Ramsay knew protocol about when they are allowed and not allowed to enter a home.

鈥淭his tragedy could have been avoided if the simple respect of the broader laws were respected,鈥 said Sorochan in the lunch break.

Davidson is expected to take the stand on Wednesday morning.
