NDP leader Adrian Dix had a number of duties in 91原创 on Monday, and one of them was to officially open 91原创 NDP candidate Andrew Mercier鈥檚 campaign office.
A large and enthusiastic crowd of about 120 supporters crowded into the 91原创 City office for the event, with Dix giving a campaign-style speech and Mercier also firing up the crowd.
As with all NDP functions, there was a collection taken. with about $10,000 raised at the event. This will go towards the local campaign.
The attendees enjoyed home baking and coffee, as a procession of NDP supporters brought baked goods into the office in preparation for the event.
Mercier spoke about the disengagement he has seen on the campaign trail. He has been door-knocking for the past year in a number of areas of the riding, and is hearing from many people how they don鈥檛 plan to vote in the election.
He praised Dix for his plan on lowering the voter registration age to 16. Mercier pointed out that 鈥淥nly 20 per-cent of 18- to 25-year-olds are registered to vote.鈥
He added that 鈥淗ow do I register to vote?鈥 is one of the most common questions he hears at the doorstep.
Among those at the event were four members of the 91原创 Board of Education 鈥 chair Wendy Johnson and trustees Candy Ashdown, Cecelia Reekie and Megan Dykeman.
Also on hand were fellow NDP candidates Shane Dyson, who is running in Fort 91原创-Aldergrove, and Aldergrove resident Sukhi Dhami, who is running in Abbotsford West.
The office, located at 20443 Fraser Highway, is open daily.
