Election sign restrictions proposed

23606langleyElectionsigns5Corners
The roundabout at Five Corners in Murrayville is currently plastered with federal election signs. 91原创 Township is proposing a bylaw that would restrict election signs in roundabouts and medians, but only during municipal elections.

An amendment to 91原创 Township鈥檚 Highways and Traffic Control Bylaw will make signs on medians and roundabouts illegal during municipal election campaigns.

However, placing election signs at these public locations remains legal for provincial and federal campaigns.

鈥淚 have been waiting for years to do this,鈥 commented Councillor Mel Kositsky, when council tentatively approved the change on March 28.

Final adoption of the bylaw is expected later this spring.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an eyesore. It鈥檚 a hazard,鈥 Kositsky said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 absolutely crazy.鈥

Other councillors saw it differently.

鈥淚 think this is overwhelmingly restrictive,鈥 Councillor Kim Richter said.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 going to handicap candidates. It鈥檚 unfair and it鈥檚 undemocratic.鈥

The bylaw amendment does not impact provincial and federal campaigns because these come under the jurisdiction of the election acts of those senior governments.
