It begins with legendary broadcaster Jim Robson鈥檚 voice over the PA system, as he does the play-by-play of Greg Adams鈥 double overtime goal, which sent the Vancouver Canucks to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994.
On cue, students 鈥 Kindergarten all the way to the Grade 7s 鈥 at Dorothy Peacock Elementary filter out of their classrooms and into the foyer of the Walnut Grove school.
The students are decked out either in Canucks鈥 gear, or in the team鈥檚 blue and green colours. Many carry signs or posters which pay homage to their hockey heroes, or wave flags.
Normally, the hundreds of students would assemble outside for a group picture, which each student then gets a copy of.
But on this particular Wednesday, with Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals just hours away, a sudden downpour has hit, forcing the students to assemble in the school鈥檚 gym.
And while the weather may have taken a turn for the worse, it does little to dampen the spirits of the hundreds of students, who raucously chant, 鈥楪o Canucks Go.鈥
鈥淭his is not unique (for) Dorothy Peacock Elementary,鈥 says teacher Terry Linden, who has organized these game day rallies since he first arrived at the school 13 years ago.
鈥淭he popularity of what we do here is wonderful.
鈥淚t is a way of getting the kids whipped up for the games.鈥
Linden has seen a huge surge in excitement for the team from when he first started the rallies.
鈥淚 remember the first ones, I would get a dozen kids. But now, we have had, I would say easily, a couple hundred.鈥
鈥淚t is different from year to year, but of course, this year is special because it is the first time we are celebrating the Stanley Cup Finals so we are really looking forward to it.鈥
David Camparmo, 12, a Grade 7 student at Dorothy Peacock Elementary student, created his own Stanley Cup three years ago. The Walnut Grove elementary school has been holding Canuck game day playoff rallies for the past 13 years.
