Conservative Party of B.C. Leader John Rustad says Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Dallas Brodie has been removed from his party's caucus, and will not be welcome to return.
The move comes after Brodie challenged the caucus to "fire her" and asked Conservative MLAs to have a vote on removing her on Thursday (March 6), according to a release from the Conservatives Friday. Brodie reportedly walked out of the caucus room.
Rustad said her removal is a "result of her decision to publicly mock and belittle testimony from former residential school students, including by mimicking individuals recounting stories of abuses 鈥 including child sex abuse."
"Horrible things happened to vulnerable children at Residential Schools 鈥 including pedophiles preying on children; at Kamloops Indian Residential School, Gerald Mathieu Moran was charged and convicted by Canadian courts with several dozen sex crimes he committed against children while working there," Rustad said.
"In a recent podcast appearance, Dallas Brodie uses a mocking, child-like voice to belittle testimony from former residential school students, saying things like 'my grandmother鈥檚 truth' and 'my truth, your truth' in a child-like 鈥榳hining鈥 voice."
Rustad said he believes strongly in free speech, "however, using your stature and platform as an MLA to mock testimony from victims alleging abuse, including sex abuse, is where I draw the line."
However, Rustad drew the line at denouncing Brodie's comments around burials and grave sites at former residential school sites. He said her removal is about an elected MLA using her position of authority to mock testimony of survivors of abuse, including child sex abuse.
"I want to be clear 鈥 this has nothing to do with whether or not there are undiscovered remains at Kamloops Indian Residential School, where it is objectively true that no new bodies have been found."
Brodie first posted to X on Feb. 22 as the party's then-attorney general critic claiming "apparent mistreatment" of a lawyer who is suing his own law society for libel after having asked the society to reword training materials around residential schools. In her posts, she said "the confirmed number of child burials at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School site is zero ... No one should be afraid of the truth. Not lawyers, their governing bodies, or anyone else."
Brodie refused to take down the post and posted her letter to Attorney General Niki Sharma on March 4.
She came under fire from her Conservative colleague and house leader, Chilliwack-Cultus Lake MLA A'Aliya Warbus, who posted to X in the days after to: "Inform yourself, get the latest facts, research AND talk to survivors. Questioning the narratives of people who lived and survived these atrocities, is nothing but harmful and taking us backward in reconciliation."
The Conservative Party of B.C. will be taking over Brodie's files, "including advocating to ensure the Law Society of BC uses accurate language in training materials, and does not unduly agitate against its members," Rustad said.
"The privilege, and platform, of being a Conservative MLA comes with an expectation and responsibility to do the right thing 鈥 mocking former residential school students giving testimony, including testimony about child sex abuse by pedophiles, is beyond the pale.鈥
