A foursome of golfing buddies from 91原创 and Abbotsford sank a hole in one at last week鈥檚 Lotto Max, winning the $30 million jackpot.
Abbotsford鈥檚 Ian McMurtrie, Wayne Miller and 91原创鈥檚 Tom Moryson and Joe Scully, who work together in 91原创, have been buying their Lotto Max together for a couple of years.
McMurtrie, 46, saw the winning numbers while making breakfast and watching the Saturday morning news.
鈥淢y wife had a look on her face and she said somebody in Abbotsford had won the Lotto Max,鈥 said McMurtrie.
The winning lucky Quick Pick ticket was purchased at the Otter Co-op. After checking their numbers several times in disbelief, the couple began screaming and collapsed on the floor. McMurtrie then signed all four winners鈥 names on the back of the ticket and started calling his friends with the exciting news.
Scully said he thought his friend was playing a joke: 鈥淚 thought it鈥檚 the Master鈥檚 weekend and they鈥檙e probably trying to get me to come over and watch golf and have a few beers, so I hung up the phone.鈥
After seeing an e-mail copy of the winning ticket, the reality of the situation finally sank in.
鈥淚 always had this conviction that I was never going to win on my own, but I had a feeling I would win with these guys,鈥 said Scully.
Moryson got the call from McMurtie鈥檚 wife early Saturday morning. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 believe it. I had to drive over to Ian鈥檚 house to find out for sure,鈥 said Moryson.
First on the agenda for the self-professed 鈥済olf fanatics鈥 is a trip to Pebble Beach and St. Andrews for some quality time on the links. The foursome are also planning a trip to Augusta for next year鈥檚 Masters Tournament to celebrate the one-year anniversary of becoming multimillionaires.
McMurtrie summed up their new reality by referring to a BCLC TV commercial featuring four friends fly fishing: 鈥淚 just saw that commercial again this morning and thought 鈥榯hat鈥檚 just like us鈥- only we鈥檒l be golfing!鈥
For the 62-year-old Moryson, becoming a multimillionaire is still sinking in.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 know if I鈥檒l quit working altogether,鈥 he said.
He doesn鈥檛 think he鈥檒l move out of 91原创 either.
鈥淚鈥檓 staying in 91原创. We have a nice house here,鈥 he said, adding they will likely get some new vehicles and do some travelling.
鈥淏ut it鈥檚 family first. We鈥檒l make sure we can help out where we can.鈥
Moryson is married with three children, ages 34, 26 and 24.
鈥淔or now, I鈥檓 just going to sit back and relax,鈥 he said.
