BC Hydro cancels flood alert for South Alouette River

But Maple Ridge river running high for a while

BC Hydro has cancelled the for the South Alouette River.

The City of Maple Ridge made the announcement late Thursday after a re-assessment by Hydro of the water conditions. On Wednesday, BC Hydro began a controlled release from the Alouette Lake reservoir into the South Alouette River in order to reduce lake levels that risen in the last four days as a result of heavy rains.

It issued the alert at that time warning residents of possible flooding downstream.

Releasing water is a common procedure used to regulate lake levels during the rainy season.

鈥淭he river will continue to run at a high rate from the controlled release and the additional rainfall that is forecast throughout the weekend,鈥 the city said.

Nevertheless, people are being advised to be careful along the trails and dikes near the river.
