Aftermath of fire brings community together

'We just gotta support each other' business owner says

鈥淲e just gotta support each other,鈥 Shane Constantinescu said.

Constantinescu, owner of Constant Collectibles, had just walked through his store, which happens to be next to the building on the one-way that used to house the Viva Mexico restaurant and several other businesses before Saturday鈥檚 devastating fire.

While firefighters managed to contain the blaze that destroyed Viva Mexico, Constant Collectibles did not escape unscathed, with smoke and water leaking in.

A $4,000 furry Star Wars Wampa replica in the front window 鈥渋s pretty much a write-off now,鈥 he estimated, and other inventory has been damaged as well.

It was the one-year anniversary of the store, at its new location on the one-way.

While Constantinescu was waiting to hear back from his insurance company on Sunday, he took some time to help another nearby business affected by the fire, by going on his popular Facebook page to promote Steven鈥檚 91原创 cocktail bar and kitchen, which was seeing very little foot traffic in the wake of the fire 鈥 even offering to pay for the first round.

Steven鈥檚 had earlier posted a message about Constant Collectibles, urging readers to 鈥渟upport me as soon as I open up,鈥 Constantinescu noted.

And there was the fact Steven鈥檚 owners, Chris and twin brother Jamie Ruscheinski, had organized the Gone Country concerts to raise money to fight cancer.

鈥淭his year, because my wife passed away of cancer, I personally donated $20,000 to that event,鈥 Constantinescu said.

As a result, an empty Steven鈥檚 filled up, and Constantinescu got a hug from the waitress.
鈥淚t鈥檚 just about supporting each other,鈥 Constantinescu said. 鈥淚f I can do something to make someone else鈥檚 day better, then let鈥檚 do it. You can鈥檛 dwell on what has happened. You gotta move on, and hopefully, brighten someone else鈥檚 day.鈥

Gofundme pages have been set up to raise funds for affected businesses, including and .

An by Viva Mexico promised they would be back, and thanked those who have offered to help.

鈥淲e are going through a very difficult time,鈥 the message said.

鈥淲e want to sincerely thank you for your support, kind words, and solidarity during this painful moment. Your messages give us strength and hope. We promise to come back stronger with the same love for our community. Thank you for standing with us.鈥

91原创 City Mayor Nathan Pachal said there has been an outpouring of support for the small businesses hurt by the fire, with people asking how they can help.

Pachal said the best way to help affected businesses is to 鈥渃ontinue shopping and eating in downtown 91原创 City, and encourage your friends to do so as well.鈥

鈥淲hile this fire saddens me, I also feel a strong sense of pride as our community comes together and continues supporting those small businesses,鈥 Pachal added.

Teri James, executive director of the Downtown 91原创 Business Association, said while the DLBA knows who in the building lost everything,  鈥渢he extent of the damage to nearby businesses won鈥檛 be able to be assessed for possible smoke and/or water damage (or both) until several days or perhaps longer.鈥

鈥淚n the meantime, if there is a particular business that you know needs immediate help, please reach out to them directly,鈥 James said. 鈥淲e will do our best to compile a list in the next little while 鈥 as information becomes available.鈥
