A new piano graces the 91原创 Hospice Society, a replacement for one that was lost as a result of an attempted fraud on the non-profit group last year.
The new piano was funded by a number of donors, including the family of society board president Kathy Derksen.
It鈥檚 dedicated to the memory of Iris Preston, whose legacy donation was a key part of starting the society on their road to building a freestanding hospice residence, Derksen said.
鈥淪he was a lovely piano player,鈥 Derksen recalled.
The new piano arrived in April, and is on wheels so it can be moved around the building easily for the various residents, said executive director Shannon Todd Booth.
It was necessary after a scam last fall caused the society to believe they were getting a baby grand piano, almost for free.
It was the almost that tipped off staff.
The scam involved an apparent donation by someone calling themselves 鈥淛anice Lawson,鈥 who said the piano had belonged to her late husband, and she wanted to see it go to a good home. All the hospice would need to do was pay the moving costs.
But the moving fees were between $860 for seven-day delivery, up to $1,550 for next-day. Hospice staff grew suspicious at the high fees, and the fact that the movers were only accepting payment via eTransfer or bank cash deposit, not PayPal or simple credit card transaction.
A Google search revealed that other people had fallen for the scam, in which someone promises a piano to a school or charity and directs them to a moving company, which then vanishes. No piano ever appears.
The allegedly Montreal-based moving company had a website that listed the address of a real moving firm, but by a different name.
Although the 91原创 Hospice Society dodged the scam, Todd Booth noted that they had already paid a legitimate moving company $500 to remove their old upright piano, which left them without an instrument.
The new piano arrived in April, and will stay where it is.
