A Sunshine dream realized for Murrayville鈥檚 Doug Penner

New power chair for 22-year-old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy will fit in his race car

Doug Penner doesn鈥檛 get surprised, ever, according to his dad Cam.

Last month, however, was an exception, when the 22-year-old Murrayville resident arrived at his grandparent鈥檚 garage to find it transformed into a 50鈥檚 nostalgia caf茅 and diner scene, and about 40 of his family, friends, and people who have supported his over the past 15 years.

Doug, who lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, knew he was getting a specially-fitted wheelchair that will allow the avid car fan to visit the track and see his car, a 2006 Dodge Charger RT with 5.7 liter Hemi run in the Street Legals on Friday nights at Mission Raceway.

It was all the other stuff he wasn鈥檛 expecting that made his eyes pop.

Doug usually does not ever show surprise, but this time he did, when he discovered there was more to his Sunshine dream than he was expecting on April 29. (Theresa Wiebe/Special to 91原创 Advance Times)

Courtesy of the Sunshine Foundation of Canada which grants dreams for kids and youth living with severe physical disabilities, the wheelchair came with a 鈥渞ace track enabler鈥 package, that, in addition to the collapsible power wheelchair that can be folded into the Charger trunk, there were accessories 鈥 umbrella, drink holder, backpack, and more 鈥 plus a tuning interface that will allow Doug to plug his laptop into his car and change the engine鈥檚 programming for more power, plus a GoPro camera to record all the action.

And well-known car guy Jay Leno, on video, giving Doug a virtual tour of his Maclaren F1. Leno finished the video showing Doug a Hot Wheels collectable of the F1, signed for Doug.

鈥淎t the reveal we watched Doug鈥檚 eyes pop as he was presented with that very same car,鈥 Cam related.

Doug called it 鈥渁 very cool surprise.鈥

When Doug signed up for the Sunshine Dream program, he asked for a guided tour of Jay Leno鈥檚 garage.

When the pandemic put a halt to all Dream travel, he set the goal to buy a car and modify it while having his friends race it for him.

A problem arose.

Doug couldn鈥檛 fit his power chair in the Dodge trunk, so if he wanted to go racing, he鈥檇 either need to use his manual chair (and be reliant on people he is with to push him around) or bring two vehicles, one to race, and the other to carry his chair.

With that problem resolved, up next, is the June 4th Ride For Doug.

This time, in addition to the traditional motorcycle ride, there will be a Show and Shine for cars during the afternoon from 3-5 p.m. Doug will have his Dream stuff there, along with his race car.

鈥淎ll the car people are invited to join all the motorcycle people for the Celebration BBQ dinner afterwards,鈥 Cam, said. Details are at .
