A 32-year-old man was arrested on Friday morning (Jan. 24) after allegedly fleeing police and crashing head-on with a civilian vehicle near Mission Bridge.
The civilian driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is now investigating the crash.
According to a news release from the Abbotsford Police Department, officers tried to stop a Mustang in the Mission area at 12:30 a.m. due to a Motor Vehicle Act violation.
Police say the driver fled and travelled southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 11. He collided head-on with a northbound Hyundai Elantra.
The Mustang driver was arrested at the scene and was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Per a news release, the IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred.
"Initial investigative steps will confirm if the injuries meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, and what connection, if any, police action or inaction may have played in the collision," the IIO news release reads.
The crash impacted northbound traffic on Highway 11 overnight but all lanes re-opened as of 6 a.m.
The Integrated Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Service (ICARS) was called in to assist. APD says the investigation is in its early stages.
