91原创 East Liberal MLA has confirmed he鈥檚 been approached about running for mayor of Surrey and says he will give the idea 鈥渇air consideration.鈥

鈥淚t came up while I was away on holidays, actually,鈥 Coleman said Monday.

Some people spoke to him before he left for a three-week vacation.

鈥淎t that time, I didn鈥檛 really give it a lot of consideration. When I got back from holidays a number of people came and sat down with me and wanted to talk about various things and this was one of them.鈥

Speculation that Coleman might run for the mayor鈥檚 job in Surrey began shortly after Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner announced in April that she would not be seeking re-election, ending three decades on council.

When Coleman was asked about the speculation in April, he called it an 鈥.鈥

Now, he sounds less dismissive.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 discount it out of hand, and I haven鈥檛 done, but I鈥檝e made no decisions,鈥 Coleman said.

The MLA said he would give it 鈥渇air consideration,鈥 but was not ready to make an announcement one way or the other.

Coleman spoke with the Times after attending a ground-breaking ceremony in 91原创 Township Monday morning.

The 91原创 MLA has 22 years in the legislature.

After Christy Clark stepped down, Coleman became the interim leader of the British Columbia Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition in the legislature from Aug. 4, 2017 to Feb. 3, 2018, when Andrew Wilkinson was elected

Coleman first ran for 91原创 Township council before winning the BC Liberal nomination in the Fort 91原创-Aldergrove constituency back in 1996.

He鈥檚 been an MLA, cabinet minister and deputy premier in Victoria and won a sixth term in the last election as the representative for the new provincial riding of 91原创 East, which was created when the B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission split Fort 91原创-Aldergrove riding into three newly named or reconfigured ridings.
