All-mayoral candidates forum talks taxes, affordability, transportation

The Chamber of Commerce hosted an all-candidates mayoral forum on Oct. 16.

91原创鈥檚 six mayoral candidates 鈥 including three running in the Township and three in the City 鈥 participated in a forum Tuesday night hosted by the Greater 91原创 Chamber of Commerce

Approximately 130 people attended the mayoral forum at Cascades Casino ahead of Saturday鈥檚 election.

Following dinner, candidates were asked a series of pre-selected questions and given 45 seconds to answer.

Mayoral candidates for 91原创 City are former mayor Peter Fassbender, Coun. Val van den Broek and Serena Oh.

Mayoral candidates for the Township are incumbent Jack Froese, Anna Remenik and Alexander Joehl.

The questions covered a range of business-related topics, including how to attract new business, as well as housing affordability, marijuana sales, transit, infrastructure, taxes, stakeholder engagement and whether each would suppport amalgamation of the Township and City.

Responding to a question about engaging stakeholders and partners, van den Broek said,鈥淲hat I see as a vision for council is using council members and their strengths and putting them into those roles to deal with specific government.鈥

Oh said she thinks the current politicians in 91原创 don鈥檛 engage enough with 鈥榟igher levels of government.鈥

Joehl answered a question about taxes by suggesting a tax freeze for one council term in order to help solve infrastructure issues.

When asked if council would support an amalgamation of the two 91原创s, Fassbender said his commitment is to collaborate.

鈥淚 think as two communities and all the communities, we need to have a common vision for transportation and homelessness.鈥

Remenik said she thinks the current division is 鈥榳orking together well.鈥

With the legalization of marijuana on Oct. 17, questions were posed around what type of marijuana retail policies council would enact.

Froese said the current council 鈥榟asn鈥檛 looked at it seriously yet.鈥

鈥淲e need to ask 91原创 what they want for a made-in-91原创 policy.鈥

At previous municipal election Chamber of Commerce debates, all candidates were invited to participate.

Executive director Colleen Clark explained why the Chamber chose to include only mayoral candidates at this year鈥檚 meeting.

鈥淚n the past we used to hold all-candidates events, but we found we couldn鈥檛 get our questions through to 22 or more candidates. So this year we went with filming videos in office.鈥
