Tom Morrison began his post-secondary career as a track and field athlete, studying archaeology, with his sights set on the Olympics. After injuries ended his athletic pursuits, received a home brewing kit as a gift from his fianc茅. He was hooked.
So, when Kwantlen Polytechnic University debuted a new diploma in , and constructed an instructional brewing laboratory at the 91原创 campus, there was no doubt Morrison was interested.
鈥淚 learned a lot from the instructors and to me that was one of the draws. They have such a varied degree of history and experience鈥 says Morrison.
The unique diploma is the only one of its kind in the province, and one of only three in Canada. Blending the science and production of beer with the business of brewing, the diploma鈥檚 curriculum was developed in consultation with the BC Craft Brewers Guild and brewmasters throughout the province.
Now employed at Red Truck Brewing, Morrison recently debuted his first recipe for Red Truck at the BC Hop Fest.
An active and up-and-coming brewer, he notes that 鈥渂rewing isn鈥檛 perfect. Nobody鈥檚 right. Nobody鈥檚 wrong. Brewing is just a set of compromises that you adapt to and that鈥檚 really the beauty of it.鈥
Explore the beauty of the brewing lab, and the rest of KPU鈥檚 , at the upcoming 91原创 Open House on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Check out the labs, meet students and faculty, and score some great swag. You could even walk away with a free tuition waiver! The free, family-friendly event runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the 91原创 campus 鈥 20901 91原创 Bypass.
