Sometimes hearing loss is sudden, caused by a loud noise or injury. But for most of us it’s much more gradual, which makes recognizing the signs a lot more difficult.
“My family mentioned that I did not seem to be understanding or hearing them clearly,” Barbara Vollet says, so she decided it was time to have her hearing checked.
“I first met Kim with Ears Hearing Clinic at the 91ԭ Senior Centre to have my ears tested, and from there to her office for a more in-depth test of my hearing. She is very personable and listened to me and what I wanted to do.”
Kim Galick, owner of in 91ԭ, says hearing is a very personal thing — some people aren’t ready to embrace hearing aids right away, and some take a long time to find the perfect fit. Hearing happens in the brain, not just in the ears, which means using hearing aids can take practice. Some people are eager to give it a try, but some of Galick’s clients get tested and don’t continue the process for months.
“I was not reluctant to wear hearing aids because I wanted to keep myself as healthy as possible, and my hearing was part of that,” Vollet says.
The sound of the bathroom clock
Vollet appreciated that Kim at Ears Hearing asked her about her goals, and adapted her services to suit.
“She listened to what I wanted to do — from my perspective, I don’t believe in turning my hearing aids up and down to suit myself. I just don’t feel that’s real life. The world is naturally a noisy place and I am blessed to be a part of it now with my hearing aids,” she says.
Hearing conversations and the TV more clearly certainly had a positive impact on Vollet’s life, but there were other smaller things too.
“I know it may sound silly, but the sound of the second hand on the clock in my bathroom, as well as my signal indicator in my car — incredible. It was so nice to be able to hear those things again,” she says.
