From music to dance to theatre, few things compare to exceptional arts presented outdoors in a beautiful setting. And Shakespeare? Even better!
Here in 91Ô´´, the City’s summer theatre showcase features ’s unique adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, July 19 to 22 and 26 to 29 at Douglas Park.
Set 300 years in the future, when climate change and melted polar ice caps have caused mass emigration from Japan, India, Indonesia, Korea and coastal China, multicultural communities are forced to live and work together to survive. Wars and territorial skirmishes have reduced the population to a near-feudal state and this is where we find the town of Verona under strict martial law, with curfews and patrols to prevent open warfare in the street.
Capulet, a majority landowner in the area, tries to lead by example of strength in solidarity. His household feels protective against the encroaching Montague family, who won many allies through battle.
Children of these families, Juliet and Romeo, meet accidentally and realize that love, regardless of race and tradition, has a greater power than hate to drive change.
The curtain rises on the Spirit Square stage at 7 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
