As more and more people get bitten by the creativity bug, there鈥檚 also a big push to reduce what we鈥檙e throwing into the landfill. The two come together beautifully through programs like 鈥 Oct. 19, exploring great ways to give new life to old clothing. You鈥檒l even learn how turn that old shirt into a reusable shopping bag!

鈥淭hese are some of our most popular classes,鈥 notes Stephannie Bulman, who with husband Clint owns Castle鈥檚 Sewing, serving and inspiring local sewing enthusiasts for 77 years!

In fact, Castle鈥檚 is the oldest independent, third-generation, family-run sewing centre in Western Canada, the oldest and No. 1 Brother Dealer for Western Canada, and one of the oldest Pfaff Dealers in Western Canada. And that speaks to both their expertise and enthusiasm at sharing what they know with new generations.

Turning what you love into something new

Of course, it鈥檚 not only the landfill that sees the impact of a throw-away culture. With consumers growing more aware of issues such as the amount of water used in manufacturing, it makes get as much use from materials as we can.

Quilters and crafters have long embraced the chance to use up colourful material scraps, but how about turning that flannel into a cosy throw-cushion 鈥 perfect for fall! Or maybe that beautiful blouse with the awesome pattern but outdated style could be cut up to embellish something new?

These are some of the many possibilities sewers and crafters are exploring more and more, Stephannie says.

Many of these projects are also easy ways to rediscover the possibilities and pleasures of sewing.

鈥淚f you haven鈥檛 sewed since Grade 8, or maybe you鈥檝e never picked up a needle before, the new machines make it simple to get started,鈥 Stephannie says. 鈥淵ou can easily turn that old pair of jeans into a pillow or apron, for example.鈥
