The sounds of summer: waves lapping at the shore, laughter in the park, birdsong in the backyard鈥 maybe even an outdoor music festival if we鈥檙e lucky. Don鈥檛 let hearing damage from noisy yard work make you miss out!
Kim Galick, owner of in 91原创, has tips to protect your hearing 鈥 and your hearing aids 鈥 when soaking up summer sun.
Summer hearing protection and prevention
鈥淣oise induced hearing loss happens in three situations: noise that鈥檚 too loud, too close or too long,鈥 Galick says.
The lawn mower may not seem too loud at first, but prolonged exposure can case permanent damage. Protect your hearing with ear plugs 鈥 inexpensive ones from the hardware store will do the trick, or visit for a more comfortable custom pair.
Summer also means swimming! A little water stuck in your ears can usually be resolved by gently shaking your head and drying off with a clean towel. If you can鈥檛 get it out, water in the ear canal can become a breeding ground for bacteria and lead to infections. For those who suffer from chronic ear infections or just want extra protection, Galick makes swim moulds from soft, floatable silicone.
Summer hearing aid care
Summer isn鈥檛 the easiest time for hearing aids, but that doesn鈥檛 have to stop you from joining in the fun!
- Prevention: Wash and dry your hands before handling your hearing aids, to prevent sand or sunscreen from causing damage. Going near the pool or lake? Turn your hearing aids off and store them in a protective case, so you don鈥檛 forget before hopping in the water! 鈥淵ou can also invest in hearing aid sleeves which protect the device, improve comfort and absorb sweat and sunscreen,鈥 Galick says.
- Daily care: At the end of every day, take the time to wipe down your hearing aids to remove any grime, sweat or sunscreen. Then open the battery door (if you don鈥檛 have rechargeable hearing aids) to allow any other moisture to evaporate overnight. 鈥淎 dehumidifier case is a great investment for overnight storage,鈥 Galick says.
