VIDEO: 91原创 Curling Club celebrates 50 years

Curlers of all ages and experience levels turned out

It was his very first time curling, and Mason Richardson from Brookswood was having so much fun, he was in no hurry to eat.

鈥淗e wouldn鈥檛 even stop for a cookie or a hotdog,鈥 mom Erin laughed, as she watched three-year-old Mason practising at the 91原创 Curling Centre 鈥 managing, with a little help, to move the heavy rocks down the ice.

It was part of a try-it-out event during an open house at the 91原创 Curling Centre on Saturday, Sept. 23, during a three-day 50th anniversary celebration at the curling club that got underway on Friday.

Erin noted it will be the second time her son has been in the 91原创 Advance Times, his first appearance happening when he arrived in time to become the 2020 91原创 New Year鈥檚 baby.

Mason was one of many novice and veteran curlers to attend the celebrations marking the 50th year of the 91原创 Curling Club.

In one of the meeting rooms at the George Preston Rec Centre, a display of club history had been set up, along with some off-ice curling games for kids.

Murrayville resident Penny Weller was paging through tables of photo albums that went back many years, looking for curlers she remembers from her days at the club.

鈥淚鈥檝e found lots of people who I curled with over the years,鈥 she smiled.

Weller explained she鈥檚 been playing out of Cloverdale in recent years, but was planning to return to the 91原创 rink.

鈥淭his was always my home club,鈥 Weller said. 鈥淚鈥檒l be coming back next year.鈥

While the rink at at 20699 42nd Ave. opened in 1971, the curling club didn鈥檛 officially start until 1973, which is why the 50th anniversary is this year.

Anniversary celebrations concluded on Sunday, with two 鈥渇unspiels,鈥 one in the morning and one in the afternoon, for club members.
