91原创 Rams had a seven-point lead heading into the final quarter but didn鈥檛 have enough in the tank to hold down the Westshore Rebels offence on Saturday, Sept. 2 at McLeod Athletic Park.
Rebels scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, beating the Rams by a touchdown, 28-21.
Rams president Dana Mathson said the team made a great effort 鈥渋n all three phases of the game鈥 against Westshore, which he noted is the number one-ranked team in the Canadian Junior Football League, scoring 鈥渘o less than 50 points鈥 through four games this season.
鈥淥ur defense came out and got after it, causing three turnovers in the first half alone,鈥 Matheson summarized.
鈥淭hey held the Rebels to seven points until they tied the game at 14 with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Rebels jumped out to a 28-21 lead after trading touchdowns and with a minute left, and the Rams driving, we fumbled the ball at midfield and that was that.鈥
Rams quarterback Trey Jones completed 15 passes for 218 yards and hit Broxx Comia for a touchdown. He caught five passes for 113 yards. Jones used his legs in the ballgame and punched it into the end zone from a yard out and Kairo Hassan also scored a touchdown on the ground.
Rebels quarterback Te Jessie who is on pace to smash the CJFL record for single season touchdown passes, finsihed the game 20 of 32 for 292 yards and connected with Kieran Poissant for a touchdown. He also ran for a major, but characteristically threw three interceptions.
Rams defence forced five turnovers including those three inceptions, two made by Kyle Huish. Owen Merry had the other.
The Rebels did find success on the ground as Gerren Hardisty led the way with two touchdowns on 19 carries and 100 yards.
Rams secondary Kyle Huish was named one of the B.C. Conference defensive players of the week after intercepting two Westshore passes and making five solo tackles.
And his teammate Shaan Sandhu was named to the special teams players of the week, making three important special teams tackles and being great on kick returns all afternoon.
Rebels now sit atop the BCFC standings with five wins, while the Rams record falls to 2-2.
Next Saturday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m., Rams will host the Prince George Kodiaks in Support of the B.C. Burn fund with a portion of the gate and Rams 50/50 going to support the fund.
