91原创鈥檚 Heinen returns to Boston Bruins

Player goes to training camp to compete for roster spot

Three-and-a-half years after 91原创鈥檚 Danton Heinen was traded by the Bruins, the 28-year-old will return to Boston to audition for the team.

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced Heinen has been signed to a professional tryout agreement (PTO), under which unsigned veteran players can compete for a roster spot on an NHL team at training camp.

Bruins training camp is to begin later this month at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton, Mass.

Heinen was originally drafted by the Bruins with a fourth-round pick (116th overall) in 2014.

In the 2017-18 season, his rookie year, the 6鈥1鈥, 188-lb. forward recorded a career-high 47 points.

It was in October of 2017, that the 91原创 native scored his first two career NHL goals, leading the Bruins to a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks.

鈥淚t was pretty cool鈥 it鈥檚 something you dream of your whole life, and you kind of just go into shock for a bit there,鈥 Heinen told reporters after the game.

In his fourth season with the Bruins, Heinen was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for left winger Nick Ritchie.

After recording seven goals and 14 points in 43 games with Anaheim, Heinen was released as a free agent, and played with the Pittsburgh Penguins for two seasons.

He has totaled 70 goals and 106 assists for 176 points in 413 career NHL games.

Heinen, who played through the ranks of the 91原创 Minor Hockey Association, served as captain of the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League in 2013-14, posting 29 goals and 33 assists for a team-high 62 points in 57 games.

In his first and only year in the BCHL, Heinen won the Bruce Allison Memorial Trophy as B.C. Hockey League Rookie of the Year, as well as the Bob Fenton Trophy as the BCHL鈥檚 Most Sportsmanlike Player.

He earned a scholarship to play NCAA hockey for the University of Denver, where his coach was Jim Montgomery, now head coach of the Bruins.

After Denver, Heinen played two years with the Providence Bruins before being signed by Boston.
