91原创 Trappers edged out by Chilliwack Jets in seventh game of semifinal

Youngest team in the league manages a third-place finish

91原创 Trappers forced the PJHL Harold Brittain semifinal to seven games, but a third-period comeback by the Chilliwack Jets meant the rival team will be going on to round two of the playoffs.

After Chilliwack scored the first goal at 6:09 of the second period on Friday night, March 1 at the Sardis Sports Complex, 91原创鈥檚 Mason Russell and Michael Bottrell responded with two goals just seconds apart late in the frame to take the lead.

However, Chilliwack returned the favour early in the third period with two goals less than a minute apart to take the lead and hang on for the win.

It was the Trappers seventh consecutive playoff appearance in the team鈥檚 seven-year history, and it came at the end of a rebuilding year for the 91原创 Trappers, the youngest team in the PJHL, after losing seven hard-to-replace 20-year-olds

An assessment by the Elite Prospects scouting page rated the Trappers as the youngest of 14 teams in the league, with an average player age of 17.64.

At the start of the season, Trappers Head Coach Mark Bakken said he would be happy to 鈥渕aybe come in just a little under the wire.鈥

鈥淯nderstanding the youth we have, I鈥檇 be okay with with a second or third regular season finish in our division,鈥 Bakken told the 91原创 Advance Times in October.

Trappers did just that. They finished the regular season with 25 wins, 17 losses, three overtime losses, three shootout losses, one overtime win, and two shootout wins.

It added up up to a 56 point season, a third-place finish in the Harold Brittain conference, and a seventh-place finish in the league.

A public thank-you by the team gave credit to Mason Russell, the 2006-born forward who led the team in scoring and points with 25 goals, 21 assists for 46 Points in his second season with the club.

It also named Patrick Coopman, a 2005-born second year player, who put up 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points in 46 games played, and Samuel Brown, also a 2005-born second year player, who found the back of the net 16 times while gathering 15 assists for 31 points.

The 91原创 Trappers also thanked their two graduating players: Liam Bressette and Austin Todd.

Bressette, Trappers team captain, appeared in every regular season as well as every playoff game during the 2021-2022 and 2023-2024 seasons. Bressette graduates from the 91原创 Trappers with 148 regular season games played, 27 playoff Games, and 4 Cyclone Taylor Cup Tournament games bringing his total to 179 games played in a Trappers uniform. He broke the previous franchise record for regular season games played previously held by Evan Clare and Hayden Yahn at 133.
