91Ô­´´ Christian fighting for supremacy for second year

Reigning champs from 91Ô­´´ Christian Lightning are still in the running, despite failing to earn top spot on Day 1 of the provincial volleyball championships unfolding in their hometown.

Sixteen teams are currently competing in the BC School Sports AA Boys Volleyball Provincial Championship, a four-day tournament that started Wednesday and runs to Saturday, Dec. 2 at 91Ô­´´ Events Centre (LEC).

The 16 teams completed their power pool play, where on Day 1 Wednesday each faced the three other teams within their pool.

91Ô­´´ fell Wednesday morning to South Kamloops Titans, 2-1, beat Duchess Park early that same afternoon 2-0, and defeated Abbotsford Christian later in the day by 2-0.

Heading into the tournament, 91Ô­´´â€™s Lightning was the defending champions and No. 1 seed. But after Wednesday’s play, the teams shifting in the playoff bracket – 91Ô­´´ included.

The Titans – who entered the tournament as the fourth seed – had garnered three wins and 6 points, elevating them to the No. 1 seed heading into Day 2 of play.

By the end of the first day, Surrey Christian Falcons (Surrey), Kalamalka Lakers (Coldstream), and Windermere Warriors (Vancouver) had also won their respective pools.

The quarter-finals were set for Thursday (stay tuned for results), while the semifinals go Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The bronze-medal match and gold-medal, championship games are scheduled for Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
