Approximately just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday an underground pipe either burst or had a leak, causing water to move to the surface, on 56 Avenue west of 264 Street and just south of Highway 1.
Around 4:30 p.m., 91Ô´´ Township utility crews arrived to repair the pipe and allowed only local traffic through the area. The public was asked to avoid 56 Avenue to reduce possible delays.
"Traffic control personnel was on site to manage traffic in the area, including the closure on each end of 56 Avenue (at 256 and 264 Streets)," reports the Township.
The Township noted the Gloucester industrial area and surrounding properties along the road may have experienced some "pressure and low flow issues" while crews repaired the water main break.
91Ô´´ Animal Protection Society (LAPS) is located right where the water main break occurred, but executive director Sarah Jones said the Township staff "were amazing and able to re-route the water."
"So we were able to still have toilets and care for the animals," she said, although staff did bring in water bottles due to some water running brown.
Jones added that flaggers helped guide pre-scheduled appointments into the shelter's parking lot.
As of 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, utility crews completed the repair and 56 Avenue was opened in both directions for regular traffic.
