24 teams pursued pumpkins as part of the Cranberry Festival Canoe Races

A team from the (FCKC) took first place in the A final of the Cranberry Festival Canoe Races in Fort 91原创 on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Organized by the every year to coincide with the Cranberry Festival, and held on a course in the Bedford Channel, the event featured 24 teams of 10 paddlers executing tight turns on a circular, 1,000 metre course.

Competitors came from Vancouver to Harrison and Cultus Lake. Organizers said a quarter of the teams paddle regularly in Fort 91原创, from the Fort 91原创 Canoe Club and Fort Canoe Kayak Club.

Times from the first morning races were used to place teams in the afternoon finals, which saw crews compete in three separate races, including the annual Thanksgiving tradition of the pumpkin race, where teams competed to retrieve a gourd dropped off Jacob Haldi Bridge into the channel.

After getting a pumpkin, teams paddled to Brae Island, where a crew member jumped out of the canoe, ran to one station where they were loaded a glass of cranberry juice on the blade of their paddle and had to run a short distance carrying it to the next station.

There, they exchanged the juice for a bag of cranberries, jumped back into the canoe and were off to the finish line.

Third place in the A final was a U14 team from FCKC.

Teams SOAR-X (Fort 91原创 Canoe Club) and Squidward won the B and C finals respectively.

Fort 91原创 to Host Provincial Paddle Events

Later this month, the FCKC will host athletes from around the province attending clinics, a training camp and a provincial regatta.

Held over nine days from Oct. 14 to 22, it will include a 鈥淲omen on Water Clinic鈥 supporting female involvement in paddle sports (Oct. 14-15) , a women and girls open house on Sunday, Oct. 15 from 2-4 p.m., Canoe Kayak B.C.鈥檚 fall training camp for the B.C. team (Oct. 16-10), and the 鈥淏.C. Cup 4 Fall鈥 long distance regatta featuring 2km, 6km and 16km races on the Bedford Channel Oct. 21- 22.

Club Commodore Sandra Young described it as 鈥渆xciting.鈥

Fort Canoe and Kayak Club offers recreational and competitive programs for youth and adults, operating from the paddlesport dock on the Bedford Channel in Fort 91原创, located on Billy Brown Road, just west of Glover Road behind the Fort Pub.
