Tara Johnson Hawkins captured a memorable image of the Northern Lights shimmering over Fort 91原创鈥檚 historic community hall on Friday night, May 10.
鈥淚t was an incredible sight,鈥 Hawkins told the 91原创 Advance Times, who took several pictures at the hall and Marina Park between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m.
鈥淵ou could see it all across the sky even with the naked eye, but the colours were much more intense looking through the camera on my phone.鈥
Images by 91原创 Advance Times readers show the lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, could be seen throughout most of 91原创.
Other reports said the lights were seen from Vancouver to Victoria, as well as Penticton to Prince George and beyond.
Space Weather Canada said it was the product of massive solar flares, describing it as a 鈥渕ajor geomagnetic storm.鈥
The sun has been producing strong solar flares since Wednesday, resulting in at least seven outbursts of plasma. Each eruption 鈥 known as a coronal mass ejection 鈥 can contain billions of tons of plasma and magnetic field from the sun鈥檚 outer atmosphere, or corona.
The United State鈥檚 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the first coronal mass ejections reached Earth Friday night.
Scientists said the flares seem to be associated with a sunspot that鈥檚 16 times the diameter of Earth.
