A community celebration was held at Fort 91原创 Community Hall on Saturday, June 17 for the official unveiling of a new memory garden.
The garden was designed by a Fort 91原创 firm, VanderZalm Landscape Architect, and constructed by 91原创鈥檚 Cedar Crest Lands Ltd.
It features a bubbler, pond, West Coast planting, and carriage house benches where people can sit and enjoy the space.
Brigitte Seib, executive director of the Fort 91原创 Improvement Society, said the garden has been an idea four years in the making.
鈥淭he commemorative grant offered opportunities for musicians and artists and more space, so the garden will do that,鈥 she said.
Families were invited to attend the free event and bring their own picnic to enjoy the entertainment, which included the Canadiana Roots band called Tiller鈥檚 Folly and children鈥檚 entertainer Penny Pom Pom.
Games were also set up on the lawn.
A celebratory cake was served at noon.
鈥淭he project honours our past, present, and future volunteers and supports the local community, providing a new space to gather and reflect and increases opportunities for Canadians to celebrate, building a sense of pride and belonging to Fort 91原创 and Canada,鈥 Seib said.
Seib hopes to have a gazebo constructed on the lawn for next year as the society celebrates its 100th birthday, having formed in 1924.
鈥淚t鈥檚 important for community to have a place to go.鈥
Once constructed, the gazebo will be available to book through the community hall.
The new memory garden is located on the north side of the Fort 91原创 Community Hall property and its creation was financed by a Celebration and Commemoration Program grant by Heritage Canada.
The society鈥檚 next event is Fort 91原创 Jazz Fest in July, a free four-day event with entertainment and games.
The Fort 91原创 Community Improvement Society was established in 1924 and in 1925, the society bought the property from the municipality for the back taxes. In 1931, the new hall was completed entirely by volunteers.
The society has been taking care of the historic hall ever since.
Seib said people can contact her for information or to share their own event ideas at info@fortlangleycommunityhall.com.
