Employees of the Aldergrove Save-On-Foods annually participate in the 91原创 Township-wide garage sale to raise funds for BC Children鈥檚 Hospital.

Unfortunately it didn鈥檛 work out this year, but that didn鈥檛 stop the dedicated community members from holding the fundraiser with a focus on food, said Laura Jamison, coordinator for the local region at Save On.

鈥淗opefully we raise a few thousand today,鈥� she said, noting that currently funds raised so far in 2024 were at $17,000. 鈥淲e hope to [round it out].鈥�

Jamison, her husband, and a couple of her colleagues stood under the cover of the grocery store with a table set up with chips, buns, drinks, and hot homemade beef brisket on Saturday, May 25.

For a $5 donation, people could get a bag of chips and beef brisket sandwich, and spin the wheel to win More Rewards points.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been doing fundraisers for BC Children鈥檚 Hospital for almost 20 years,鈥� Jamison noted.

When the store has held a garage sale, Jamison said, it would be out front with a semi-truck which would accept donations for the month.

This year was one of the best turnouts since the Township first began holding a municipal-wide garage sale in 2019, and despite the less-than-ideal weather, the Township reported a 鈥済ood turnout of shoppers鈥� when asked by the Black Press Media query.

At the Williamson鈥檚 residence, Kathy and her husband Mark were selling a family member鈥檚 things after they moved into hospice.

鈥淲e were cleaning everything out, and I鈥檓 glad that we did it today鈥� the timing was perfect,鈥� Kathy said.

Within the first hour they had a constant stream of people, she added.

鈥淲e have very old luggage, a lot of antiques, books, and鈥� anything leftover we will donate to charity and the thrift store.鈥�

91原创 is one of several Lower Mainland communities that hold city-wide garage sales every year.

Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody also hold community garage sales, while in other Metro Vancouver cities, neighbourhood garage sales draw draw big numbers of participants to events like Surrey鈥檚 Sullivan-Panorama community garage sale and Vancouver鈥檚 Great Grandview Garage Sale.
