VIDEO: 91原创 City pressed to put speed bump near Hunter park

Instead, letters will be sent to residents of cul-de-sac

According to Lori Wright, residents of her street have made a case for a speed bump along 45A Avenue, the road that runs past 91原创 City鈥檚 Hunter park.

A majority of them signed a petition, which prompted the city to do its own test that showed drivers were speeding, Wright told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥淲e had 88 per cent of neighbours in favor of a speed bump,鈥 Wright said.

鈥淲e did our due diligence, doing the traffic calming process.鈥

But, she said, no bump is being installed, and drivers are continuing to speed.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e flying down here and it鈥檚 getting ridiculous.鈥 Wright told the 91原创 Advance Times.

Delivery vehicles coming back from drop-offs are among the worst offenders, she said.

鈥淲e have so many people that use this park, there鈥檚 little kids running around, I have grandchildren that come here. Something is going to happen.鈥

Earlier, Wright had convinced the City to expand a 30 km/h playground reduced speed zone along the entire length of 45A from 200th Street to the park. However, she feels the sign showing the speed limit was poorly placed and has had little impact on speeding.

According to the City鈥檚 Director of Engineering, Parks & Environment David Pollack, while their traffic engineering review of 45A Avenue, using radar and vehicle counts, showed drivers were exceeding the posted speed limit, driving 41 to 44 km/h in a 30 km/h zone, the road is a cul-de-sac with no through traffic.

鈥淲hile acknowledging that the measured speed on 45A Avenue exceeds the posted speed limit during the day, it is local homeowners that are using this road and I would argue that there is some personal responsibility for those owners to preserve neighbourhood livability,鈥 Pollack told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥滱s such, the City will issue a letter to the neighbourhood, encouraging the local residents to be mindful of their traffic behaviour and the impact on the livability of their neighbourhood.鈥

Wright鈥檚 reaction: more than 40 km/h in a 30 km/h zone is speeding.

鈥淭his is 11 km/h over the speed limit, and if you look in the Motor Vehicle Act, that is classified as speeding which comes with a $196 fine,鈥 Wright said.

Pollack said 鈥渆ffective neighbourhood traffic speed management falls under the 鈥3E鈥 umbrella 鈥 education, enforcement and engineering, although the tendency is to move straight to the third 鈥淓鈥 - engineering solution.鈥

All requests for traffic calming or speed reduction measures, which are 鈥渇requently鈥 received, are reviewed 鈥渂ased on a Council-adopted traffic calming policy and a well-established technical review procedure,鈥 Pollack said.

鈥淭his ensures fairness and consistency among similar requests, upholding of technical standards, and appropriate use of limited resources.鈥
