Cascades Casino in 91原创 celebrated the Year of the Dragon in its annual Lunar New Year event on Saturday, Feb. 10.
A traditional lion dance and performance by the Fortune God were featured at the event, which was attended by 91原创 City Deputy Mayor Teri James, MLA Megan Dykeman, and councillors Leith White, Delaney Mack, Rosemary Wallace, and Paul Albreicht.
The casino has celebrated the Lunar New Year for more than 10 years, estimated Patricia Mori, guest services.
鈥淭his year was an awesome turnout, better than last year. It鈥檚 a fantastic display, and everyone that鈥檚 here receives a blessing,鈥 she said.
The performers are part of a dance group based in Vancouver, and Mori said they come every year for the casino鈥檚 event.
鈥淭he dance symbolizes good luck and the performance will be vivid and entertaining, accompanied by beating drums and clashing cymbals,鈥 said Raymond MacNeil, vice-president of operations, BC East of Gateway.
MacNeil explained that the word for leafy greens in Cantonese sounds similar to the word for 鈥渂ecoming wealthy.鈥 So the lion dancers tear apart lettuce, which is 鈥渟pat鈥 into the audience to symbolize a blessing of prosperity in the new year.
Mori said that the casino is looking forward to holding the celebration again next year.
鈥淲e wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year,鈥 she cheered.
91原创 City has a second Lunar New Year celebration taking place at the library on Saturday, Feb. 17, starting at 1:30 p.m.
