Love was in the air at the Fort 91原创 Lions Club hall on Saturday, Feb. 10, during its Valentine鈥檚 Day market.
Vendors from across the Lower Mainland came out to display and sell their homemade treats and trinkets to gift to a special someone or family member on Valentine鈥檚 Day.
Alexis McDonagh, 14, came from Maple Ridge to sell her homemade beeswax candles and lip-balm.
She has nine hives in her backyard now, but she started with one, after her dad was inspired to help local pollination.
鈥淲hen we first started, I wasn鈥檛 as much into it because I was still scared of bees. But over time, I became more comfortable and then I started doing it,鈥 McDonagh told the 91原创 Advance Times.
While she doesn鈥檛 think it will turn into a profession for her in the future, McDonagh said she enjoys it as a side business while she鈥檚 in school.
鈥淚 just love learning and teaching and helping people with it,鈥 she said.
McDonagh encourages anyone to host a couple hives in their backyard, but cautioned that it requires dedication.
鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely a commitment. It can be quite a bit of money in the beginning, but if you sell a bit of on the side you can make a lot of money off of that,鈥 she shared.
She has been an at-home beekeeper for five years now, and said she鈥檚 gone to many markets with her parents.
For her candles, they are made with molds she finds and thinks people will enjoy.
McDonagh鈥檚 products, including her bees鈥 honey, are available at the Golden Meadows Honey Farm in Maple Ridge, and she can be found at on Facebook.
Josie Santiago, social media manager for the club, said the market was a success and she looks forward to the next one.
