VIDEO: Crews respond to second fire at abandoned 91Ô´´ City house

House was site of a fire in the middle of the night earlier this month, neighbour said

A boarded-up house that is part of a parcel slated for redevelopment was the site of a second fire this month.

91Ô´´ City Fire Rescue crews were at the house at 20150 53 Ave. on the evening of Thursday, March 27. Another fire occurred in the vacant home earlier this month, according to a resident in the area.

"Crews attended from the City. Smoke and flames [were] showing coming from the building, and [they] proceeded to extinguish the fire," said fire chief Scott Kennedy.

The Thursday fire was called in at 8:30 p.m.

The previous fire was on March 16 and was called in about 4:15 a.m.

"That one was more smoke than fire," Kennedy said.

There was some fire damage from the March 16 fire but the March 27 fire left a large chunk of the roof collapsed.

"Obviously [we are] looking at the two of them now together, because there's been two fires," he said regarding a potential cause.

The property along with five adjacent properties are slated for redevelopment but he could not say whether the owner will be required to move to demolition because of the fire.

"So the property owner did secure the premises by boarding it up, and the City continues to work with them, because they are what we term now as abandoned homes, in preparation for development…. So whether that means fencing, whether that means getting them torn down, because ultimately that's going to happen with them, the City is currently working with the developer on that."
