There was a line up of people waiting to see the kitties available for adoption at Cedar Rim Nursery Saturday morning.
The nursery is hosting the Canadian Animal Rescue and Extended Shelter (CARES) this weekend for its two-day October feline adoption event.
Tucked into the back corner of the building, tables and cages are set up for people to view the available cats and process adoptions on site, thanks to the help of Cedar Rim staff and CARES volunteers.
The shelter has a longstanding relationship with the nursery and the owner has supported adoption events for years, explained Clive Ellis, public relations director at CARES.
This will be the second adopt-a-thon event at the nursery this year. The location is an ideal spot with the extra foot traffic of visitors.
鈥淎ll these events, of course, help us tremendously in raising funds for the shelter,鈥 Ellis said.
Presently, CARES has more than 150 feline friends in its care, and the costs are rising to provide adequate food and medical care.
鈥淲e pride ourselves on giving the cats a good home, lots of love and attention,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淭hese poor [cats] need our help, they need our support, and hopefully we can find them good homes.鈥
On Saturday, five kittens were quickly adopted in the early hours of the event. Some who have attended previous CARES adoption events may have recognized Laddu and Barby, both surrendered in April when the family鈥檚 newborn baby was found to be allergic.
Donna Healey-Ogden, a volunteer at CARES, said these events help alleviate the overload of cats the local shelter is experiencing.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been getting pregnant cats鈥 and kittens that have been abandoned and are starving. What are we going to do? Leave them because we are full? No,鈥 she said.
The event runs again today, Sunday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cedar Rim Nursery is located at 7024 Glover Rd.
Another adopt-a-thon is in the works for sometime in November.
