Victim of 91原创 shooting identified as local man

Police ask for witnesses, dash camera footage to help investigation

A 41-year-old local man has been identified as the person killed in a 91原创 shooting that also wounded another person in the early morning hours of Friday, Aug. 2.

Dillan Unger, 41, was killed in the incident, according to Cpl. Chase Smith, a spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which has taken over the case.

"This appears to have been a targeted and isolated incident,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淥ur team is actively working to gather evidence and advance the investigation."

The incident took place on a property in the 7000 block of 202B Street, where police were called out at around 12:46 a.m. for a report of gunshots. Officers found two men suffering from wounds, who were both rushed to hospital.

Unger later died of his injuries. A second man has been released from hospital.

IHIT is identifying Unger to help move the investigation forward.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dash camera footage from the area of 202B Street between 68 Avenue and 72 Avenue between 10 p.m. Aug. 1 to 3 a.m. on Aug. 2 is being asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

IHIT is working in cooperation with the 91原创 RCMP, the BC Coroners Service, and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS).

Unger appears to have been a longtime 91原创 resident who had a few run-ins with the law when he was a young man.

In 2004, he and Kyle Llewellyn Barber were sentenced for a pair of violent muggings that had taken place the year before. In robberies the trial judge referred to as "poorly thought out," the pair attacked people and stole wallets and small items, hitting a victim with a tree branch in one case, with beer bottles in another.

Both men were given 20-month conditional sentences, to be served under house arrest and curfew, and warned by the judge during sentencing that if they broke any of their conditions, they could got to prison to do "straight time" for the remainder.

After that, court records do not show Unger appearing before a judge in B.C. for almost 20 years.

In May of 2023, he was charged with theft under $5,000. That case was still before the courts when he died.

Barber, Unger's co-accused in the muggings from 2003, was murdered by gangster Albert Jackman in 2009 in 91原创. Jackman believed that Barber had ripped off a cannabis operation, and invaded Barber's house with Gregory Barrett. Jackman stabbed Barber to death with a pair of scissors.

Jackman was given life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for first degree murder, while Barrett was convicted of manslaughter.
