UPDATED: Water leak uncovered apparent drug lab in 91原创 City building

After fire fighters saw what was in the unit with the leaky sprinklers, they called in police

Several days after police removed a drug lab from the second floor of a two-storey 91原创 City building in the 20500 block of Fraser Highway, a length of police tape remained attached on an entryway door to a stairway leading to the upper floor, and a restaurant on the floor below remained closed for emergency repairs.

A second-storey window appeared to be missing some glass.

91原创 RCMP Cpl. Zynal Sharoom said the clandestine drug lab was discovered after officers were called to the scene on Tuesday, Jan. 16, because the fire department was preparing to make an entrance to locate a broken water pipe that was leaking into the floor below.

鈥淕enerally before the fire department breaches any building, if it鈥檚 not on fire, they will want police to stand by,鈥 Cpl. Sharoom explained.

Once inside, fire fighters 鈥渕ade some observations which was consistent of a clandestine lab 鈥 and that鈥檚 where we got engaged,鈥 Sharoom told the 91原创 Advance Times.

After a warrant was obtained, police experts in clandestine lab disposal returned to the scene on Thursday to disassemble the illicit installation.

Sharoom said the lab was removed and there is no hazard to the public.

Officers are continuing their investigation.

A notice posted at the site and online by the restaurant on the ground floor, Food by Fanta, said 鈥渨e regret to inform you that Fanta must temporarily close due to an unforeseen emergency repair.鈥

鈥淲e understand this may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely apologize. Our team is working diligently to resolve this issue swiftly and safely 鈥 rest assured, we are doing everything in our power to reopen quickly.鈥

An occupant of the building鈥檚 ground floor, who asked not to be identified, said they called the fire department to shut off a leaky sprinkler pipe.

None of the businesses on the ground floor are connected in any way to the second floor.

鈥淭he building is a strata and we each own our own units.,鈥 the occupant said.

鈥淲e feel a bit fortunate that the incident resulted in this [the drug lab] being caught.鈥

Staff members at the Penny Pincher Thrift Shop next door, who also did not want to be identified, described a 鈥渕assive鈥 police presence, when officers returned on Thursday.

Online real estate records show the building was constructed in 1948, and the second floor had what was described as a 1,615 square foot 鈥渃ondo home.鈥
