North 91原创 elementary school went on lockdown earlier this afternoon.
Around 12:20 p.m., James Kennedy Elementary was placed in hold and secure while police investigated a nearby incident.
A small group of teenagers was seen in the alleyway behind the local Dollarama in Walnut Grove with what appeared to be a handgun, but it was a false alarm.
鈥淭he youth were located and found to be in possession of a toy cap gun,鈥 said Cpl. Craig van Herk with 91原创 RCMP.
The lockdown was lifted about 35-minutes later.
An early dismissal was previously scheduled at the school for 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, which went ahead as planned.
Parents posting in a Facebook group said some of their kids were shaken up when they picked them up.
鈥淎 hold and secure is used if there is a security concern in the neighbourhood and involves everyone remaining inside the school as exterior doors are secured,鈥 explained school principal Cathy Gracie in an email to parents just after 2 p.m.
She commended the actions of students and staff, and said no students were injured.
