Penalties and trouble in net led to the Giants losing 5-2 Wednesday to the Royals.

91Ô´´'s Vancouver Giants suffered from penalties in New Year's Day home game that saw the Victoria Royals rack up a 5-2 win.

Victoria took a 5-0 lead before the Giants got on the board at all, with Victoria's Hayden Moore scoring first off a pass from Markus Loponen at 7:57 in the first period.

Brayden Boehm added another point, with an assist from Justin Kipkie, just a few minutes later, and then Teydon Trembecky caught a rebound with 4:03 left in the first.

All three goals were on Royals power plays.

Proving they didn't need a man advantage to score, the Royals kept running up the score, with Boehm firing in his second of the game before the first period, and Cole Reschny making it five mid-way through the second.

The Giants finally made an appearance on the scoreboard late int he second with London Hoilett, assisted by Jaden Lipinski, and with 1:08 left in the game, Brett Olson took advantage of a Giants power play to add one more point with the help of Ethan Mittelsteadt.

Vancouver was absolutely hammered at the net. Starting goaltender Matthew Hutchison made 16 saves on 20 shots before Burke Hood came in to relieve him, stopping 25 of 26 shots.

Meanwhile, Victoria's Jayden Kraus had a quiet night in his net, stopping 17 of just 19 shots from Vancouver.

Giants head coach Manny Viveiros was less than impressed by the team's play.

"We didn't have a chance tonight. You could tell that from the very onset of the game tonight," Viveiros said.

The previous game had seen the Giants eke out a 7-6 win, decided in a shootout, against the Royals.

"Even when we were down last night, we weren't playing bad," Viveiros said. He compared that performance with the team taking some "really dumb penalties" in their Wednesday loss.

"Our fourth game in five nights after the break, our kids, to be honest were running on fumes, but still you have to understand how you have to compensate for that and kind of change your game in some areas – making sure that you're playing a little bit smarter, but we just didn't do that tonight," Viveiros said.
