What should 91原创 Township do with the lands around the 91原创 Events Centre? The Township is inviting the public to give their thoughts at an open house Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The Township is working on a plan called 91原创 Events Centre 2040, a follow-up to its 200 Street 2040 plan which envisioned a transit-oriented future for the 200 Street corridor in Willoughby.
With TransLink planning for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line down the middle of 200 Street, the LEC at 80 Avenue and 200 is set to be right in the middle of a proposed "Hub" transit village.
The idea is to turn the area around the intersection into a walkable urban village, with housing, businesses, and public spaces and recreation opportunities in close proximity.
The LEC and its surrounding site have already seen a number of expansions since the main stadium and gymnasiums opened in 2009, with the most recent major change being the pro soccer field for Vancouver FC built in 2023.
Another major expansion will be the five-rink project underway in the northeast section of the site, with three ice arenas and two dry floors for lacross or ball hockey built above them.
There is still land for future growth around the LEC, and the LEC 2040 project will ask residents about future opportunities "to transform these lands into a mixed use arts, sports, and entertainment district, anchored by the existing 91原创 Events Centre," according to the Township.
The open house will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the LEC's banquet hall, at 7888 200 Street.
