A star-studded lineup has been assembled for “Pros versus Joes” in 91ԭ, a softball home run derby with a serious purpose.

Organized by addictions expert and interventionist Andy Bhatti, the Sunday, Sept. 10 event –running from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at 91ԭ’s McLeod Athletic Park – aims to raise public awareness about mental health, trauma, and addiction issues.

Participants include MLB Slugger and two-time World Series champion Jonny Gomes, country music stars Dallas Smith and Shawn Austin, Vancouver Canucks Alumni Kirk McLean, actor Aleks Paunovic – whose television series credits include roles in Hawkeye, Snowpiercer and Van Helsing – and mixed martial arts champion and stunt actor Jason “Dooms” Day.

They will be participating in a softball home run derby against local players.

Country music stars Shawn Austin, along with 91ԭ’s own star Dallas Smith, are also performing following the derby, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

In 2020, Smith founded the Dallas Smith Charitable Organization to raise funds and support towards destigmatizing mental health issues, “and championing local organizations to offer and provide assistance” to those in need,” reads its website.

This isn’t 91ԭ’s country star Smith’s first time performing in the annual derby, participating in the virtual event in 2021, as part of his mental health advocacy.

Last year, Smith also gifted $25,000 towards the development of Foundry 91ԭ, a youth wellness centre on Eastleigh Crescent.

Recently, Smith was announced as a performer to take the stage at the Canadian Country Music Association 2023 awards on Sept. 16.

All celebrities will be signing autographs for cash donations that will go directly to the Nate D Foundation to help pay for people trauma therapy.

As well, Bhatti is asking people to bring donations that can help wildfire victims, telling the 91ԭ Advance Times the list includes “school supplies, non-perishable items, clothes for kids, diapers, blankets, anything that can be used.”

Bhatti advised the event is free and open to anyone, with a focus on family and friends who have a loved one who struggles with addiction or mental health.

“Treatment for the addict is typically where the work begins and ends [which can fail] to acknowledge the feelings and pain of those around them, such as family and friends,” Bhatti explained.
