91原创 RCMP partnered with Electronic Recycling Association last Wednesday, Nov. 22, to inform the public about data safety on personal electronics.
鈥淗ard drives, laptops, phones, those kinds of things with personal data that people store up can keep it safe and secure by safely destroying it,鈥 said Cpl. Rob Roffel, community liaison with 91原创 RCMP.
The idea came from the RCMP anti-fraud department, he said.
鈥淚t ensures [your] data doesn鈥檛 end up in the wrong hands, and gives a peace of mind knowing that the information is 100 per cent gone,鈥 explained Roffel.
Electronics dropped off were broken down by staff from the Electronic Recycling Association, who then put the hard drives, SD cards, phones, and anything else containing personal information through a shredder that further breaks it down so data can鈥檛 be recovered.
鈥淭his way then we know people鈥檚 data is securely destroyed,鈥 Roffel said.
Christina Schneiter, residential service manager with Gateway of Hope, was on site accepting donations from folks who also dropped off electronics.
鈥淒onations go towards blankets, warm clothing, food hampers鈥 it鈥檚 especially helpful during the winter season,鈥 she explained.
